Is it Binaural Beats Really Working?

Most of us will have a question in our minds that What are binaural beats?  and Do Binaural Beats work?

Binaural Beats

Essentially Binaural Beats are meditation music audio tracks in which two tones are fed to you in respective ears, one tone in left ear and one in right ear and what happens is when the two tones meet in your brain it creates a third tone which is the phantom tone.

Today we're going to put on headphones, go back to the bad and enjoy the soothing sounds of the latest digital drug: Binaural Beats. These computer generated sound files are said to massage your brain and produce all sorts of effects from psychedelic experiences to behavior modification.

Let's point our skeptical eye at the science of binaural beats and at some of the claims made for them.

A Binaural Beat is created by playing different tones in each ear and the interference pattern between these slightly differing frequencies creates an illusion of a beat.

Binaural beats is one of the most important Meditation Technique which allows clear mind, to enter whichever pattern they desire by hearing two slightly different tones in the right and left ears. The brain creates a new tone within the mind much like the eyes use two images to create one depth image. After about 15 minute the brain begins to synchronize or resonate the same frequency as the new tone, tricking the brain into operating at a very specific pattern.

Human brain activity occurs in 4 different patterns or frequencies those are - Alpha Beta Theta and Delta, however our brain wave pattern shifts uncontrollably throughout the day.

Each brain wave pattern has its own unique benefits including Accelerated learning, keen focus, relaxation, deep meditative state, heighten creativity, anxiety relief, increase intuitions, accessing the subconscious mind and many more.

Binaural beats can work for nearly anyone, when combine with meditation, binaural beats becomes the powerful tool for mastering the mind. Binaural beats meditation can shed light on the mystery of dreams to the conscious mind, allowing the possibilities of mind to become infinite.

Do Binaural Beats work?

If you search "Binaural Beats" or "What are Binaural Beats" over Internet you'll quickly find that a whole industry and business is built on the idea that listening to binaural beats can produce all kinds of desired effects in your brain. It can alter your mood, increase concentration, helps you follow a diet, get you relax, releases stress, stop smoking, get you ready for a competition, get you better sleep, enhance your memory and even balance your chakras.

A website named "Binaural-Beats.com" offers a $30 CD that they call the world's first "digital drug". They claim it can get you drunk without the side effects. It will not be wrong to say that no matter what superpower you're looking for, someone on the Internet sells a binaural beat audio file for that power and claims to provide it.

But there is no need to buy them. It's not too hard to make your own binaural beat, and free softwares are widely available just to do that. It's pretty easy to use them, though it takes some practice to generate some of the really cool more professional sounding beats.

But the question is:- Does it really have a special effect on the brain?

A lot of people think that Binaural beats really affect our brains. The basic claim being made for binaural beats is "resonant entrainment".
Entrainment in physics is when two systems which oscillate at different frequencies independently are
brought together, synchronize with each other at whatever the combined system's resonant frequency is.

Examples of brain entrainment occur in animals in nature; for example the chirping of crickets or the croaking of frogs. Even people coming together and dancing with each other is a type of entrainment. The basic claim for binaural beats is that the perceived low-frequency beat will entrain your brain wave pattern and synchronizes the brain with the beat, thus forcing your brain into some desired state.

Most of these websites give some brief explanation of brainwave entrainment. The example you hear mostly is that of Dutch polymath Christiaan Huygens, who in 1665 hung two pendulum clocks next to each other on a wall. He noticed that the pendulums eventually matched each others frequency but always in anti-phase(opposite to each other) as if cancelling each other out.
He also tried disturbing anyone of them or setting them in sync, but they always return to the same anti-phase synchronization.

Huygens's experience is widely spoken on binaural beat websites for a demonstration of how systems can become spiritually connected and work in sync with each other through some energy field. However they misunderstand what happened and did not read the full story. Huygens also tried taking one of the clocks off the wall and when they were no longer physically connected to one another via the actual wall, the effect disappeared.

It was not the proximity of the clocks to one another that created the entrainment but it was their physical or mechanical connection to one another. With each swung, pendulum imparted an infinitesimal equal and opposite reaction to the wall itself. With two clocks on the wall, the system naturally sought the
lowest energy level, according to the laws of thermodynamics and both pendulums would thus swing exactly counter to each other and minimizes the system's total energy.

We do know that certain brain's electroencephalogram waveforms are often associated with certain kinds of activity. For example, Waking relaxation with eyes closed often produces a pattern from 8 to 12 Hz, which is called an alpha pattern. There are only a few characterized patterns and general descriptions of what kinds of activities go with them.
So to summarize their claim, they're saying that brainwave entrainment means that a binaural beat will cause your brain's electroencephalogram to match the pattern of the phantom beat.

The claim made by the binaural beat sellers depends on much more specific matches. For example, the claim that a binaural beat with a frequency of X treats headache is not reasonable. Such claims presume that we know the exact frequency of the electroencephalogram in each of these desired conditions and the fact is that brain waves don't work that way. Certain brain states produce certain brain waves; brain waves don't produce brain states. You just don't turn a dial to 6.0 Hz and induce instant happiness.

And so, while the claimed science behind the binaural beats is unfounded, doesn't mean that the effect isn't real and simply unexplained. Maybe you can listen to a certain binaural beat and induce a desired state but for reasons we don't yet understand.

But we don't need any studies to tell different kinds of music affects us differently. A lot of people who workout can have a workout playlist on their iPod which keeps them energized. Some people listen to certain music to help them fall asleep.
Music does affect our mood and so we already have every reason to expect binaural beat recordings to do the same.

In summary, binaural beats apparently do not work the way the sellers claim but there is no reason to think that they are any less effective than any other music track you might listen to, which effects you in a way you like. If they make you sleepy use them to go to sleep. If they relax you, use them for that. But don't expect them to be any more effective than regular music.

History Of Binaural Beats

The knowledge behind Binaural Beats is known throughout the history although the creation of binaural beats was possible after advancement in technology.

The ancient man have known the benefits and effects of Binaural Beats centuries before the modern technological world. Obviously they did not call them binaural beats. But they know that the consistent rhythmic sound helps in healing and spiritual benefits.

In almost every culture and religion, Binaural Beats have played an important role in the healing and spiritual development of human being. With the use of these consistent repetitive chanting the Hindu Healers, Tibetan Monks and mastered yogis have reached the greatest meditative states and discovered the spiritual peace of mind.

In 1839 Heinrich Wilhelm Dove discovered binaural beats but after that also binaural beats remained mystery for next 134 years. In 1973, Gerald Oster put together the binaural beats research by Dove and wrote "Auditory Beats in the Brains" in which Oster write the various findings and research experiments on Binural Beats.

And then slowly with the advancement in technology the truth about Binuaral Beats was unveiled and people start using them mostly for meditative purpose and for relaxing.
